Why Tarquinia is special

Tarquinia preserves something almost unique in the ancient world: actual painted colour, applied by Etruscan artists over two and a half thousand years ago. The Tomb of the Leopards and dozens of others show banquets, dancers, hunters and, later, underworld scenes — a quality of painting UNESCO calls virtually unrivalled in the Etruscan world.

The practicalities of the day

Tarquinia sits about 90 minutes north of Rome. There's no simple do-it-yourself way to see the best tombs and understand their context, so a guided day trip is the standard approach — nearly all pair it with Cerveteri's Banditaccia necropolis nearby.

Go slowly, and go guided

Unlike an open-air ruin, a tomb visit is a slow, close-up experience — small chambers, dim light, painted detail worth lingering over. A guide explains what's shifted between the earlier banquet scenes and the later underworld imagery, and why.

Pair it with Cerveteri

Tarquinia and Cerveteri form a single UNESCO listing for good reason — Tarquinia for painted intimacy, Cerveteri for scale. Doing both in one day, as most tours do, gives the fullest picture of Etruscan funerary art and belief.
